Researchers at the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics have explored how temperature can change the electronic properties of a topological material.
The study focuses on bismuth selenide and spin-orbit coupling, the interaction between an electron’s spin and its motion. Topological insulators are known for a distinction between an insulating interior and conducting surface states.
The researchers report that temperature can weaken spin-orbit coupling and change the material’s topological state. The findings identify an additional physical factor to consider when studying these materials. They advance understanding of electronic behaviour rather than demonstrating a ready-to-use electronic device.
