Quzhou is using the touring musical Nan Kong to introduce its cultural heritage and visitor attractions to audiences beyond Zhejiang province.
The production follows Kong Zhu, a descendant of Confucius who returned to Quzhou to promote Confucian culture. Theatre lobbies on the tour have hosted markets presenting local specialties and tourism information, connecting the stage production with the city itself.
By August, the musical had given 170 performances in 52 Chinese cities and had also reached Singapore and Malaysia, according to the report. The project illustrates how performing arts can become a starting point for discovering a destination’s history, food and cultural sites.
