UN Tourism and the UN Environment Programme have launched Recipe of Change, an initiative asking tourism businesses to measure and reduce food waste.

Announced on the International Day of Zero Waste, the programme brings together major hotel and travel companies. Participants are encouraged to combine operational changes with efforts to influence consumer behaviour, supporting the global goal of halving food waste by 2030.

The initiative connects environmental goals with practical concerns for hospitality businesses, including costs and resilience to supply disruptions. Measuring waste is central to the approach, giving operators a basis for judging whether changes to menus, purchasing and service actually deliver results.
