Viewers were perplexed by the bizarre discovery of the stolen phone in the clip, with one asking "how did you know to look there."

A video documenting an unusual phone theft recovery in Thailand has gone viral on TikTok. The clip posted by user @maiavalentinee has amassed more than 12.1 million views since it was shared on February 25. A note overlaid on the footage reads: "The time my phone got stolen in Thailand and this was how I found it again." The clip shows the traveler crouched in a wooded area, surrounded by crawling insects, as she peels away layers of leaves to reveal her missing phone. The caption accompanying the post reads: "A story I will never understand." While the circumstances in the video remain unclear, the incident highlights how opportunistic theft can happen in tourist hotspots worldwide. A March 2023 study published by academic publisher Sage Journals examined tourist victimization in Barcelona, Spain, and found that theft was more likely to affect young female travelers, often occurring in restaurants and bars, particularly during the summer months. Although Thailand is generally considered a safe destination for travelers, theft is not uncommon. According to the travel guide Rough Guides, "violent crime against tourists is rare, but petty theft and scams are more common" in Thailand. The publication advises visitors in Thailand to "keep an eye on your belongings, be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, and don't let your guard down completely, especially in tourist hotspots." The guide also cautions travelers in Thailand, particularly solo female visitors, to take extra precautions at night, avoid unlicensed taxis, and secure their belongings in hotel safes or lockers. It also advises keeping valuables on hand when using public transportation and being cautious at parties where drink spiking has been reported.

'How in the Hell Did You Find That'

The tourist in the viral clip provided more details about the incident in a later video, where she said she was traveling solo in Thailand for a month when she attended a beach party. After going for a swim, she realized her phone was missing. Strangely, there was no one else on the beach at the time. With the assistance of others, she tracked her phone's location and "we saw it driving away," she said in the subsequent video. Following the signal on a scooter, the poster arrived at an area with only two houses. After knocking on one door and being told by an elderly resident that she hadn't seen the phone, they continued searching. Eventually, the poster heard the distinctive ping of an iPhone's locator sound coming from the vicinity of the second house. However, they were unable to investigate further because one of the helpers was afraid of a dog on the second property. While the mystery of how the phone ended up wrapped in leaves remains unsolved, TikTok users were captivated by the story, with viewers feeling puzzled over how the phone was stolen and why it was left hidden in the wilderness. "How in the hell did you find that," asked user audree, while @flizo01 simply wrote: "What da heeeellll." Others were more concerned about the setting. "How are you not panicking w/ those bugs all over you..." posted user @sheisorphic. User @spiritual_mind27 questioned, "How did you know to look there..." while @.hana.17 commented: "How does it still have battery?" Some viewers speculated about the thief's motives. Irene wrote: "Why would they throw it out there fully functioning and everything? Then what was the point of stealing it?" Another user, t.naiqama03🇫🇯, commented: "They thought wrapping it like that won't locate the phone." User yoyoyucki proposed a different theory, saying: "It looks like they were preventing it from getting wet?? Those leaves are super water resistant along with banana leaves. My guess is they were coming back for it." Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
