A video about a thrifter's discovery of a Burberry coat at a thrift store in Canada has captivated thousands on YouTube. The clip posted by @Msfili, who did not share their name with Newsweek, has amassed over 30,000 views since it was shared on YouTube on October 5, 2024. "We spotted this Burberry coat," the thrifter says in the video, as the camera zooms in on the designer label inside the coat, which was found at a Salvation Army store in Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The video shows the poster's business thrifting partner, Daniel Huscroft, holding up the beige hooded Burberry coat. Showcasing its signature plaid inner lining, Huscroft says "that's what everyone wants to see."

Speaking to Newsweek, the YouTuber explained that they have come across Burberry coats on several occasions while thrifting. "I've found Burberry coats multiple times at the thrift store and they retail for $1,000 or more," the poster said. Their latest Burberry coat find was a used item, "so there was a little wear on it, but in great wearable condition," the poster noted. However, the decision to leave it behind was based on sizing and resale potential. "It was a smaller size, and for my sales market and audience, it would be a harder sell for me," they said. "So, I decided to leave it for another person who can enjoy it or resell it." Thrift store revenue is expected to have increased at a compound annual growth rate of 4.5 percent to $14.2 billion over the past five years, including a rise of 1.4 percent in 2023 alone, according to an August 2024 report by Research and Markets. "As a result of growing consumer spending for most of the past five years and demand for methods for sustainable consumption, industry revenue has increased," the report said.

'A Steal'

Despite the coat's luxury brand status and a price tag of just $70, the thrifter ultimately decided to leave it behind. "Contrary to popular belief, we don't always buy everything that's a great deal," the poster says in the video says. "$70 is a steal for this coat, but we left it for some other thrifter to buy." This isn't the first time the thrifter has opted to pass on high-end items. "I've left behind many luxury and designer items such as Coach, Armani, Valentino, etc. if I decide it's something I can't utilize, wear myself, or resell," the poster told Newsweek. Viewers on YouTube were amazed by the recent designer thrift store find. User @suzzanimalchannel1030 said: "Very nice find! I wish I was in the area. I would have bought it. I need a new coat! You are right that is a great price for it." User @trinasthings agreed, saying: "Very nice—I love it just for the plaid." "Yes I would have purchased it," commented @unezsimpkins9107. "It's a great find—but it looks like a very small size—I've heard resellers say that even the best clothes are very hard to sell if the size is too small," noted @dsilver1999.
