An Australian family came face-to-face with a snake on Monday after hearing noises coming from their kitchen. Residents of a home in Peregian Springs, a suburb in the Sunshine Coast Region of Queensland, called for the assistance of local reptile catchers. After investigating the sounds they discovered a lengthy carpet python. An expert wrangler from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, identified as Matt, responded to the home shortly after 1 a.m. The homeowners, who were not named, explained they had been woken up after hearing multiple items being knocked off a table in their kitchen, then realized a lengthy constrictor snake had somehow got inside. Stuart McKenzie, owner of Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, posted two photos of the early-morning "intruder" to Facebook later Monday. He wrote: "Wowzas! Imagine getting woken at 1 a.m to noises coming from your kitchen area. This is what happened to a family in Peregian Springs this morning when they heard objects being knocked off the dining table." "Luckily it was just a harmless intruder who had simply got lost and made its way into the house," he added. "Thanks to Matt for heading straight out and relocating this stunning carpet python back outside!" The species is not venomous and instead kills prey by coiling itself around it, resulting in suffocation. The carpet pythons are widespread in northern, eastern and southern Australia, Queensland Museum says. Carpet pythons are active during day and night, typically feeding on frogs, lizards, birds and mammals. Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7's website notes they grow to be the largest snake in the region, some more than 11 foot. However, the average size caught in the area is generally around 6.5 foot. It says: "Large specimens can take small suburban pets such as dogs, cats, chickens and guinea pigs with smaller specimens taking caged birds. [Their] diet mainly consists of mammals such as rodents, possums [but] also some reptiles, birds & frogs. They will often be found basking in the sun in trees, on fences or... your roof. [They have a] fantastic climbing ability."

On Sunday, the reptile relocation business responded to remove a smaller carpet python that sought refuge close to a local disability center. It said in a post: "He had taken shelter in and down a steel post holding a fence together. We jumped into action and took off a fence paling to access the cheeky bugger but he had moved along the fence. "After taking two fence palings off we were able to gently head grab him to encourage him out so we could safely relocate him back to the wild."
